For two days in May, the capital city of the United States of America, home to the White House was transformed into the Caribbean’s capital of culture as Trinidad and Tobago displayed its culture, cuisine and attractions at Passport DC.
Passport DC, presented by Cultural Tourism DC, is an annual event that showcases Washington DC’s embassies and cultural organizations with tours of more than 70 embassies and hundreds of events including street festivals, performances and exhibitions. Celebrating the diversity which exists in the city, the event also coincides with the Mayor of the District of Columbia's proclamation of May 2014 as International Cultural Awareness Month.
Now in its seventh year, Passport DC has grown into a month-long programme and the Embassy of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has participated almost since the inception of the event. This year, the dual-island nation joined approximately 70 embassies resident in Washington in throwing open its doors for the Around The World Embassy Tour on May 3, a highly anticipated and popular element of Passport DC.
Last year Trinidad and Tobago’s presentation and elaborate displays attracted upwards of 7,000 persons who enjoyed a fun-filled day of authentic “Trinbago” cuisine, dance, soca, tassa and steel pan music as well as a tourism display by the Tourism Development Company Limited (TDC).
The Embassy also hosted a cocktail reception for nationals and friends of Trinidad and Tobago and partnered with the TDC to promote the destination with a Tourism and Trade event for Washington-based stakeholders in the tourism industry, including representatives from magazines and newspapers, airline companies and travel agents.
This year, a high level delegation from the Ministry of Tourism Trinidad and Tobago journeyed to Passport DC to promote Trinidad and Tobago as the hottest Caribbean destination in 2014 / 2015 on the invitation of Ambassador of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United States and Mexico, Dr. Neil Parsan. The delegation was led by Mrs. Juliana- Johan- Boodram, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism Trinidad and Tobago who addressed guests at a reception on May 5. The exclusive event was opened to the who’s who of Washington’s travel industry and was aimed at advancing Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural and tourism agenda.
