Pan Returns to the Savannah

After a six year break, preliminary judging of the Panorama competition for steelbands will return to the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. The semi-final competition will also be hosted at the venue.

Over 130 steelbands from Trinidad’s North and East regions will converge on the event’s traditional venue on Sunday, January 20, for the “Savannah Party”.

Angela Fox, communications specialist at Pan Trinbago, said the event will evoke memories of the way pan used to be and invited patrons to “come with your cooler and party.”

Judging of the Panorama preliminaries at the Queen’s Park Savannah started in 1963. The 38 year old tradition was suspended in 2002 when a decision was taken to move the event into the yards of competing bands and their communities.

The Savannah Party will kick off at 9am and the competition will see 46 bands battling for top spots in the small, medium and large categories.

Patrons will be allowed to bring chairs, blankets and umbrellas and tickets cost $150 for the Northern Greens; $200 for the Paddock area and $250 Grounds.

Preliminary judging for the South and Central regions will take place at Skinner Park, San Fernando on Friday, January 18 while the Tobago leg will take place at the Dwight Yorke Stadium on Tuesday, January 22. Ticket prices for Tobago and San Fernando preliminaries are not yet available.

Tickets for the semi-finals are now on sale at the Queen's Park Savannah box office and are priced as follows:

Paddock $250

Northern Grounds $200

Grounds $150

(all prices quoted in TT dollars)
