Feel the Rhythm

Groove to the pulsating rhythms of sweet pan music all through the month of September as Panyard Sensations 2008 takes its annual trip around to some of the country’s hottest panyards.

Panyard Sensations, hosted by the Tourism Development Company Limited (TDC) in conjunction with Pan Trinbago Incorporated, is a concert series that highlights Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument, the steelpan, as well as the practitioners of this remarkable art form.  This year's event will also be in tribute to the late Terry Joseph.

These weekend pan concerts will commence on September 13th, 2008 and run every weekend until Sunday, September 28th, 2008. This year’s series will begin with the Merrytones steel orchestra in Diego Martin  and continue with performances by Harmonites of Barataria,  West Side Symphony of Tobago, Steel Explosion of Tobago, Pan Elders of San Fernando, Deltones of Siparia, Cordettes of Sangre Grande and the finally Hummingbird Pan Groove of St. James. In addition to the extensive and varied musical repertoires of the bands, fans can look forward to quite a few surprises from guest artistes and special performers who will be incorporated into steelbands’ nightly line-ups.

“Panyard Sensations was born out of a need to not only showcase steelpan music, but to also showcase it within the context of its birthplace - the panyard.  The rustic charm of the panyard is unique and is an integral part of this instrument’s history, and by extension, our people’s history.  The panyard is a place of innovation and creation and we want people to experience that as well,” Angela Fox, Media/Communications liaison, Pantrinbago Incorporated explained. The event is in its seventh year and continues to grow in its popularity and appeal with nationals and visitors alike. It provides an opportunity to give the country’s national instrument the year-round prominence that it deserves.

TDC will be providing a shuttle service to take hotel guests to shows on each night affording visitors to the twin isles the opportunity to feel the tantalizing sensation of traditional steelpan within the panyard setting.
